Introduction
One of the main purposes of this site is to distribute photographs of the blackboards from “chalk & talk” lectures.
The reason for doing this is that some students, for whom English is a third or fourth language, have been finding it particularly difficult to follow an explanation and take notes at the same time. With the permission of the lecturers, I will take digital photographs of the blackboard in class and make these available online here.
Clarifications and Annotations
Sometimes, something in the photograph may not be entirely clear, especially after perspective correction, so I sometimes add a little note (in bright yellow) to clarify a particular letter, word, or expression. I do not alter anything, merely add clarification where needed. Occasionally, an important point made verbally by the lecturer may be added, again in bright yellow.
Where the sequence of a lecture is interrupted by an aside (to answer a question or review a theorem, for example) those boards (or parts of boards) may be marked with a bright green bar on the left side. I'm not always 100% successful in remembering when this has happened, but if there's a green bar, you can be sure that the associated material was not in the normal flow of the lecture.
Access Restrictions
Access to the blackboard photographs is restricted to Uppsala University IP addresses. If you have any difficulty accessing the photos, please write down the IP address and subnet mask of your computer and give it to me in class so that I can add the subnet to the allowed list. For computers with one ethernet card, to find out your IP address:
- Type ipconfig at the Command Prompt in Microsoft Windows.
- Type /sbin/ifconfig eth0 at the shell prompt in Linux.
- Type /sbin/ifconfig xl0 at the shell prompt in FreeBSD.
- Type /sbin/ifconfig hme0 at the shell prompt in Solaris.
Image Enhancement
Right now, publishing these images is a multi-stage process:
- Perspective correction
- Cropping and scaling to 1024x554, 1024x678, or 1024x374
- Sharpening (if necessary)
- Annotation in yellow/green (if necessary)
Obviously, I can't guarantee that I'll always have the time to do all of this. It may happen that I just chuck the pictures straight from the camera onto the website, but hey, it's better than nothing, right?
